Furthermore grants assist nonfiction books concerning the arts, humanities, cultural heritage, and the natural and built environment. We look for work that appeals to an informed general audience, gives evidence of high standards in writing, design, and production, and promises a reasonable shelf life.

Grant awards range from $1,500 to $12,000 and funds apply to such specific publication components as writing, research, editing, indexing, design, illustration, photography, and printing and binding.

Preference is given to book projects that have a university press, nonprofit or trade publisher already committed and a feasible distribution plan in place. Recipients of Furthermore grants are located throughout the U.S. and occasionally abroad; please note that we are only able to consider books published in English.

Grant applicants must be 501(c)3 organizations; applications from individuals cannot be accepted.
