Furthermore grants assist nonfiction books having to do with art, architecture, and design; cultural history, the city, and related public issues; and conservation and preservation. We look for work that appeals to an informed general audience, gives evidence of high standards in writing, design, and production, and promises a reasonable shelf life.
Grant awards range from $1,500 to $12,000 and funds apply to such specific publication components as writing, research, editing, indexing, design, illustration, photography, and printing and binding.
Preference is given to book projects that have a university press, nonprofit or trade publisher already committed and a feasible distribution plan in place. Recipients of Furthermore grants are located throughout the U.S. and occasionally abroad; please note that we are only able to consider books published in English.
Grant applicants must be 501(c)3 organizations; applications from individuals cannot be accepted.
